Nothing tests your patience (or immune system) quite like parenting in cold and flu season

November 12, 2025

Autumn is a season that is marked with lots of exciting seasonal changes, seeing leaves transform in fiery shades of red, and orange, decorating pumpkins, and festive gatherings with friends and family. But for many parents, this season also signals the start of the much dreaded ‘cold and flu season’. Last week, my daughter’s first cold of the season hit, and I was reminded just how draining this time can be. Between sleepless nights, cancelled plans, and the never-ending tissues, it’s easy to forget that parents need care too.

Here are some takeaways and gentle reminders I had to be mindful of:

  • The importance of having a game plan.
    • Deciding ahead of time under what conditions school is off-limits (e.g., your child has to stay home), and when to go to the doctor can be a game changer. Having a plan in place reduces anxiety as it prevents you from having to make a decision under stressful circumstances.
  • Challenging unhelpful parenting expectations:
    • Parents often feel a sense of guilt for not meeting their expectations with what they believe parenting should look like. It is essential to acknowledge that striving for a ‘good enough parent’ (e.g., lower expectations for chores, social outings) rather than a perfect one during these times can be liberating and help alleviate anxiety.
  • Ask for help:
    • Talking to a friend or family member, or mental health professional about your feelings during this time is important; let it out!
  • Delegate tasks to others:
    • If there is someone who could assist in lightening responsibilities with tasks outside of your parenting responsibilities don’t hesitate to ask for help.

Final Thoughts

Parenting during normal circumstance is tough and it can be especially challenging when having to balance work, and/or other responsibilities. Try to be mindful of these challenges, integrate wellness when you can and remember you are not alone. Reach out for support-let’s take a pre-emptive strike this season. In it together.
