How can we feel gratitude amidst difficult times
Almost a year and a half ago, Nadia and I took a leap of faith and opened Crosstown Psychology and Wellness Clinic. At the time, we felt both exhilarated and (somewhat) terrified at the prospect of beginning this new chapter. While this first year was a whirlwind of learning, growing and figuring things out, it taught us one important lesson-it is alright to lean into the discomfort of doing something challenging, but it’s also important to remind ourselves that we were are fortunate to be in this position.
Many of us, often get busy and overwhelmed with the distress associated with doing something new or tough that we often lose focus of the blessing and privilege of being in that very position. The practice of gratitude could be an important resource to draw from when coping with stressors.
How can we feel gratitude amidst other distressing feelings?
- Feeling gratitude does not mean minimizing your feelings of distress associated with the ongoing stressor or saying that you feel grateful for the hardship
- It can be reframing the challenges and developing a ‘helicopter view’ of the situation
For instance, feeling grateful can be about feeling thankful for:
- the opportunities granted
- patience you’re developing
- resiliency being fostered
- the friendships that are showing up for you and the new relationships being built
At crosstown psychology, we recognize that gratitude practice does not erase hardship but it’s just one additional resource to consider as you move through your journey.
