Understanding Your Teen’s Mind and Mood

April 13, 2026

Supporting a teen isn’t always straightforward, especially when you’re trying to respect their independence.

One moment you’re giving them space, the next you’re wondering if you should be stepping in.

This came up for me recently when I was sharing my experiences on a podcast (@raisingthenextgenpod), reflecting on the work I do with adolescents both @crosstownpsych and @ontarioshores

It reminded me how often this shows up, not just for teens, but for their caregivers too.

Adolescence is a huge period of change, and many parents are left trying to find that balance between support and independence.

Questions like:
👉How do I know if it’s just a bad day or something more?
👉How can I support my teen and encourage them to open up and share with me?
👉How can I create structure and routine in the home while still respecting their own choices (e.g., to spend time with friends)?

It’s a challenge-and strengthening communication is key. Here are a few takeaways that can be helpful:

👉Collaboration communicates a genuine interest in their thoughts and feelings.
👉Clarify the intent of the communication (e.g., identify your worries and concerns) to help build transparency and to keep the messaging simple and focussed on the here and now.
👉Validate emotions by sharing your understanding of the sentiments they are expressing, it can help bring down defences, opening up communication.

At Crosstown Psychology,, we will work together to help support your teen. If you are looking for more help with strategies please reach out, link in bio.
