The Rise of Mental Health Language. Has It Become Too Common
Knowing mental health terms is helpful.
Understanding what they mean is even more important.
Over the past few years, we’ve seen a significant shift in how we talk about mental health.
Words like stress and burnout, depression and, anxiety have become part of everyday conversation.
In many ways, that’s a positive change.
More people are recognizing the importance of mental health, seeking support, and having conversations that may not have happened a decade ago.
At the same time, as clinical language becomes more common, it’s becoming easier for these terms to lose their intended meaning.
There’s nothing wrong with using these words. But understanding what they actually mean matters, especially when they shape how we understand ourselves and others.
As psychologists, one of our roles is to help you move beyond labels and explore the full context of your experiences.
Because no single word can capture your full experience.
The language we use shapes how we understand our experiences, communicate our concerns, and ultimately engage in care.
Greater awareness of mental health is something to celebrate.
Using that language thoughtfully is how we make that awareness meaningful.
