What looks like burnout in your 40s is often cumulative overload.

May 5, 2026

Your 40s can be the most exhausting decade. For many individuals, this is a stage when multiple demands peak at once, career, family, health, identity, responsibility. It is not one source of stress that is being experienced but the cumulative load of balancing it all. For instance, if you have children, this might be a time where they require more of your time and support. Aging parents might also require support in more complex ways and career responsibilities might also peak at this time. All these tasks can weigh heavily and take a toll on your emotional and physical health, leading to burnout.

Burnout often presents as disrupted or lighter sleep, persistent fatigue despite rest, difficulty concentrating, heightened stress response, and a sense that everything feels heavy. You might notice a lot of negative thoughts, including fears and doubts emerging as well. Clients often describe it as “I’m exhausted but I can’t switch off,’’ ‘I don’t feel like myself,’ ‘I can’t keep up the way I used’.

This is where therapy can play an important role in rebuilding emotional capacity. Therapy can help individuals:

  • Develop more sustainable ways of managing competing demands
  • Be more selective around their time
  • Provide the tools needed to challenge unhelpful ‘shoulds-and-musts’ beliefs
  • Develop a routine that rooted in self-care (including sleep, exercise)

Reaching out for support can be a game changer. At Crosstown Psychology and Wellness Clinic, this is a common presentation we work with. We help individuals understand what’s underneath the feelings of being constantly tired, struggling to focus and just feeling off. We will provide you with a safe space to reflect on your stressors, help you identify patterns of behaviours that you didn’t realize you had, and give you the tools to best cope in managing all your responsibilities.
